Chapter Nine

The day was a little cooler. He didn’t think their pool days were gone quite yet, but that day it was overcast and the high was somewhere in the mid-sixties. So instead of relaxing around the pool that afternoon the seven of them were lounging in the living room and chatting about things.

Cassie had finished up that ship, after he’d made love to her. She’d worked on it until lunch and then finished it up right after lunch. They had the communities, and it’d been four days since Katie had warned them of the coming balance issue, so they were alert and ready to be called at almost any time. Mara had been in touch with Emily, and so far she hadn’t noticed anything alarming. Whatever would happen there, the problem hadn’t gotten in the area yet either.

Most of all though, he kept staring at the twins in shocked disbelief. His joy fighting his consternation, surprise, and a little guilt.

Lori suggested, “Maybe we should put off tomorrow’s visit another few days. We’ll still hit all the communities in a year if we skip a third day. I suppose emergencies are always possible, but I’d hate to have to run once we got started.”

He nodded, “We can’t schedule emergencies, and we have to live our lives and take them as they come, except maybe this one which we do know about? I don’t see a problem with it, and I can have the zombies let the leader know we’re rescheduling. Of course, now we get to lounge around and go stir crazy waiting.”

Sy’lia said, “We could build a greenhouse?”

He laughed, “Nice how you snuck that in. I suppose we could at that. I wouldn’t mind fresh vegetables and fruits all year around. Umm, I bet I can send some zombies into the city, to collect some full-sized windows off one of the large window high-rises. I think that would work better than taking the smaller panes off the surrounding houses.”

Cassie said, “We’ve got enough steel to build a frame already, and I can add another enchantment to the house plinth to control heat, humidity, make sure it doesn’t get either too hot or too cold. We need sprinkler pipes, and we can hook it up to the house system for clean water and pressure. A servant would just have to manually water it once or twice a day.”

He nodded, “I bet one of the neighboring houses has a sprinkler system, or I can get that from the city as well.”

Mara interjected, “Build it over the current garden?”

Sy’lia nodded, “That would be best, otherwise we’ll have to start from scratch.”

That sounded like a good project, and it really would be helpful. He gave some of his zombies some orders, and they headed into the city to scavenge the parts and windows they’d need. Their garden was meant to feed the whole house, them and the chef and few servants, so it’d be a fairly large greenhouse.

He said, “My zombies are on the job, I need a minute or two with Kim and Lin.
